As far as there must be exchange of goods and services against money, there must be sales. Sales can come in the form of rendering goods and services whereby a customer buys the goods you render or can come in the form of rendering services, for example developing applications, Insurance and maintenance services.


What is Sale? 

Sale can be defined as a transaction between the buyer and seller in which the seller sells intangible or tangible goods, assets, services against money. It must be done between two or more parties, that is, the buyer and the seller.


Top skills every salesperson should have.


To become a good salesperson or succeed as a salesman, here are some essential skills you need to have.

  • Communication skills: 

Effective communication should be a top skill every salesperson must have. Having a script line well written can work through conversations with the customer, but possessing  the ability to relate with a customer is a top tier skill because every customer has a different ideology you are about to render. So to close a deal, a salesperson needs to know how to communicate properly with the customer.

  • Active listening:

Listening and hearing are two different things. You may be hearing a customer but listening properly. An important part of effective communication is active listening. This is an essential way to close a deal faster.

  • Problem solving skills:

As a salesperson, you must have a high initiative on how to solve customer’s problems. So far sales is concerned, there must be objections. What makes you a good salesperson is knowing how to go the extra mile in solving the customer’s problem. When you solve a customer’s problem, you have held the customer on.

  • Teamwork: 

A salesperson must know how to be a good team player to succeed in the sales profession.  You can never do everything by yourself. You need to collaborate with other team members to share strategies and ideas that will help you sell well to your customers.

  • Persuasive skill:

Every salesperson must be able to turn negative responses or feedback to positive. Every customer has been bombarded with lots of advertisements by your competitors. You must have the skill to prove to the customer the reason to choose your product. This skill is important to every salesperson to close a deal faster.

  • Product knowledge:

Before you can sell your product to a customer, you must understand the ins and out of your product. You can not sell what you don’t know about. Having a thorough knowledge of what you are selling projects confidence in you and your customer.

  • Integrity: 

Every salesperson must have integrity as it is one of the most valuable skills. According to Linkedin, 88% of buyers have purchased products or services from salespeople that they felt were trustworthy.

  • Ability to adapt to new technology:

Being able to follow the technological trends gives a salesperson leverage to outperform. Let us take for instance, during the Covid-19 pandemic, sales teams that adapted to selling remotely via chats, calls and software like Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems were productive and maintained their customers' satisfaction.

  • Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

While you are able to communicate effectively, learn to feel the same way your customers feel and have the ability to perceive the emotions of others. It helps to build long-lasting relationships and trust with your customers.
