  What is ADHD?




When a child finds it difficult to concentrate or complete a particular task without being pushed harder, there is a tendency the child may have Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This can equally occur in adults.


Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that happens in children and teens and can prolong adulthood. It affects people's behaviour, how much they pay attention to details and tasks and having trouble sitting in a particular place for a long period.


According to research carried out by the Centers for disease control and prevention, ADHD is found more in men (13%)  than in women (6%). Men tend to externalize their symptoms which makes it easier to be recognized than in that women.

 Types of ADHD

According to researchers, there are different types f ADHD which include the following.


  • Classic ADHD

  • Inattentive ADHD

  • Overfocused ADHD

  • Temporal lobe ADHD

  • Limbic ADHD


Classic ADHD: people with classic ADHD are usually inattentive, easily distracted, disorganised, hyperactive not able to sit still for a long time and impulsive. 


Inattentive ADHD:  people with inattentive ADHD are easily distracted, and sluggish but do not suffer hyperactivity.


Overfocused ADHD:  people with overfocused ADHD are generally inattentive, easily distracted, disorganised, and hyperactive but also have difficulty shifting attention to new topics. They also demonstrate obsessive behaviour and worry excessively

.

Limbic ADHD:  they possess all classic ADHD and also have chronic sadness, not depression. People with Limbic ADHD tend to have low self-esteem

  

Temporal ADHD: people with temporal ADHD generally have the symptoms of classic ADHD and also have quick temper, aggression and mood instability.


Combined ADHD: this is the most common type of ADHD. if a child has combined ADHD, the child possesses at least the combination of different ADHD.


Causes of ADHD


The cause of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD has remained unknown. It is not caused y excessively watching video games, playing too much, poor parental care or eating lots of food that has too much sugar. Researchers have studied that genetics has played a role in ADHD. other environmental factors tend to trigger ADHD such as


  • Brain injury

  • Exposure to environmental risks (e.g., lead) during pregnancy or at a young age

  • Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy

  • Premature delivery

  • Low birth weight

 

How is ADHD diagnosed?

As the cause of ADHD is unclear, there is no test for ADHD. it can only be diagnosed if there is any symptom exhibited by the child or in the adult in the past six months. Also, a physical examination can be used to review your medical history to find out if there could be any other medical or psychiatric conditions that could be the cause of the symptoms.

To know if a child has ADHD, the child is being monitored for at least six months for a particular symptom.

Treatments

Treat ADHD, there are different strategies which can be used. Combinations of several approaches can help to reduce the symptoms for some persons you may have to combine medications, nutrition, exercise and behavioural therapy while in others, you may have to take ADHD supplements and vitamins.

Two main types of medication used to treat ADHD are stimulants and non-stimulants. Ritalin and Adderall are stimulants and Strattera and Intuniv are non-stimulants.
